Weather & swimming

Denmark's longest swimming season

Summer brings daytime values of 17 to 20 °C, with August the warmest month at around 20 °C. Bornholm counts 8 to 9 hours of sunshine a day, making it the sunniest region of Denmark.

Because rock and sea store the summer warmth for long, the Baltic stays above 15 °C from late June to mid September — reaching 17 to 18 °C in August, and locally up to 21 °C in warm summers. That is Denmark's longest swimming season.

Beaches

Finest sand and clear water

Southern Bornholm has some of the most beautiful beaches in northern Europe:

  • Dueodde: powder-fine white sand and shallow water — like a Caribbean beach in the Baltic.
  • Balka & Sømarken: sheltered bays, ideal for families.
  • Sandvig: in the north, beneath the cliffs of Hammershus.
Active & cycling

235 km of cycle paths and the whole island open

In summer the whole island is open: every smokehouse, gallery, café and attraction. Bornholm's roughly 235 kilometres of nearly flat cycle paths are now at their most beautiful.

Add sailing, kayaking, climbing on the northern cliffs and boat trips to the Helligdomsklipperne and to Christiansø.

  • Sankt Hans (23 June): midsummer with bonfires on many coasts.
  • Allinge Jazz Festival (early July): around 35 concerts, many free.
  • Wonderfestiwall (August): music festival with a Baltic view.
  • Bornholm Rundt: sailing regatta and cycling race around the island.

Good to know for your trip

Daytime highs in summer are 17–20 °C, with August warmest at around 20 °C. Bornholm has 8–9 hours of sunshine a day and is Denmark's sunniest region. Days above 25 °C are rare thanks to the Baltic.

The Baltic passes the 15 °C mark from late June and stays above it until mid September. In August it averages 17–18 °C, and in warm summers reaches up to 21 °C at sheltered beaches. That gives Bornholm Denmark's longest swimming season.

Dueodde in the south with its powder-fine white sand is the most famous, plus the family-friendly bays of Balka and Sømarken and Sandvig in the north beneath the cliffs of Hammershus.

Yes. July and August are high season — accommodation in Rønne, Gudhjem, Dueodde and Allinge often sells out early, and both ferries and stays cost more. If you are flexible, June or September are great alternatives.

Highlights are the cooking competition Sol over Gudhjem (June), the midsummer bonfires of Sankt Hans (23 June), the Allinge Jazz Festival (early July), Wonderfestiwall (August) and the round-the-island competitions Bornholm Rundt.

In summer every route runs at full frequency: Ystad–Rønne from Sweden (about 1 hr 20 min, the main route), the direct ferry Sassnitz–Rønne from Germany and the connection from Køge in Denmark. Details and comparison on our ferry page.

Not necessarily. The island is small, has around 235 km of well-built cycle paths and a bus network linking every town. Many guests explore Bornholm by bike in summer.

July and August are busy in the popular spots, but the island spreads visitors well. If you seek quiet, you will find it on the north coast paths, in the woods of Almindingen or in the shoulder months of June and September.
